UK Owners: Your (Retail) Cupcake is Here!
So the rumours of UK G1 users getting cupcake have been floating around for a few days now. Looks like the truth is about 1,000 people were updated for ‘testing’, but now the wider rollout has started! If you want to jump the line queue, read on..
Its pretty easy. (I’m assuming you are running stock retail firmware – if you have a JF image, you should wait for his update. It’ll be announced here..)
First things first, grab the update: UK 1.5 Cupcake Update (CRB17) (9031)
Save it to the sd card, named “update.zip”. (If you use windows, be sure you aren’t naming it something like “update.zip.zip”.) Reboot your phone in recovery mode (hold down ‘home’ while booting until you see the diamond warning.)
Now time to update! Press Alt-L. (This will turn on logging, so you can see what is going on.) Then Alt-S will apply the update.zip from the sd card. When it finishes, it’ll reboot.
I don’t know if this version includes the shiny ‘android’ logo instead of the pulsing droid, but either way, that step takes a LONG time the first time. After that, you’re done! Enjoy!!

It appears it does include the shiny logo.

I tried to upgrade it to cupcake 1.5 after following your instructions, the same way that I did my phone, but it errored;
Installing from sdcard…
Finding update package…
Opening package…
Verifying package…
Installing update…
E:Failure at line 1: assert file_contains(“SYSTEM:build.prop”, “ro.build,fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trout:1.1/TMI-RC9/128600:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys”) == “true” || file_contains(“SYSTEM:buildrop”, “ro.build.fingerprint=tmeu/kila_eu/dream/trouInstallation aborted.
Press Home+Back to reboot
Any ideas on why this fails on this handset when it worked on my G1?
Thanks

Looks similar to the error I saw when I tried to update a phone with unofficial firmware. Flashed it back to the regular UK RC7, then applied the RC8 and RC9 updates before trying CRB17.
