Putting together some pieces off the mailing lists, it looks like someone is working on a CDMA “Google-experience” phone. I’ve got your likely specs below. No word on carrier, no blurrycam pics, no FCC filings. Just the hints.
So the new Android Developer Contest is finally announced (just 9 months late) and it has semi-open judging (via a Market app that appears to be open to anyone.) But there is some bad news too.
The NIN iphone app is coming soon to blackberry, which is ok if you have one. But what about the 5th most popular smartphone platform? No love? Well… love. (Course, it’ll prolly cost $5. But at least it will be out. If I had looked a little closer I’d know that the iPhone version is free. So presumably the Android and BB versions will be also. Doh!)
And not the BS about “oh it has this much nand, and it is probably this speed, and the cpu part number might be NVRTELLU43″, but real, actual, honest-to-god hardware specs. (Some of) you want them. (All of you want them, you just don’t know it yet – these are the real deal, so we can do things like, oh, I dunno, USB-OTG and USB-HOST. Want tv out? Yeah, you know you do..)
According to the Android Developer Blog, you can now get an official prerelease of the Android 1.5 SDK. Just grab a download below the fold and give it a go! (Maybe this is the start of an open development process..? Or, more likely, they’re offering up betas finally. The good news is, it did come out – barely – ahead of the device release.)

A lot of noise has been made recently about Android and it’s degree of “openness” (from both sides of the argument.) If you follow me here, or on the lists, or on twitter, etc, you probably already know I have strong feelings on the matter. Although I don’t usually write articles for this site (mostly it is just announcements) I had this one that I didn’t post to the lists. (It got away from me, and was mostly off-topic to the discussion.) I liked it enough to finish it, and so here you go. My take on Android, open source, and how we get this thing from a toy up to world domination.
As reported elsewhere, the so-called DRM on the Android Market is worthless. We found this out a few hours ago, but I was holding off on posting pending further investigation and talking to Google. Now that its already out.. yes, everything he says is true. The so-called DRM barely qualifies as “permissions”, and sucks down a ton of space that the G1 really can’t spare.

I’ve finally got a proper files mirror going, so things will be a little slow while I upload all the files. Once that is done, however, expect things to be fast fast fast :)
(Update: Most files are uploaded now, so we should be good. And I got JF to fix his links, which were causing much of the unexpected trouble..)
Thanks to eagle-eyed posters over on XDA-Dev, we have an official ADP1.1 update.zip image! (Update: Now there is a version with no device/version checks. Enjoy!)
